Overview

Spoonbill Restaurant and Bar, nestled in the vibrant heart of South Yarra on Chapel Street, offers a refined taste of Modern Australian cuisine that elevates local dining. From the moment you step into Unit 3/641, the space invites a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, making it perfect for a range of occasions—from intimate family dinners to lively gatherings with friends.

The culinary experience here is thoughtfully crafted and diverse. Highlights include the 250-gram Eye Fillet Grass Fed Steak served with a rich red wine jus, perfectly complemented by broccolini tossed with soy, sesame, and toasted almonds. For seafood lovers, the Market Fish of the Day showcases fresh, local catch, while the Octopus and Chorizo dish adds a bold twist to the menu. Vegetarians and vegans are also well-catered for, with options like the Vegan Big Breakfast and Miso Glazed Pumpkin Tofu providing vibrant, satisfying choices.

Spoonbill's large plates consistently impress, especially the Duck Pappardelle and Beetroot Risotto, both of which highlight the chef’s ability to balance flavors and textures with finesse. The signature Paella is another stand-out, though some guests have suggested a slight tweak to achieve an ideal caramelized crust, which would perfect the dish further. Desserts such as the Chocolate Fondant paired with salted caramel macadamia ice cream, and the Pear Cream Brulee, offer sweet conclusions that linger on the palate.

Beyond the food, the bar presents an impressive selection of refreshment options—smoothies like ‘Green Smoothie’ and ‘Nuts About You’ showcase fresh, wholesome ingredients, while cocktails including the Espresso Martini and Watermelon Tune add a playful and elegant touch to the evening.

Customer experiences reflect the restaurant’s consistent quality and welcoming service. Regulars praise the expertly cooked steaks and the warm, attentive staff, with special mentions to the manager Said, who ensures guests feel valued. While some feedback points to minor areas for improvement—such as achieving greater moisture in beef ribs or a crispier skin on pork belly—the overall consensus celebrates Spoonbill as a true gem worth discovering.

With its blend of modern Australian fare, inviting setting, and thoughtful menu variety, Spoonbill Restaurant and Bar is well-suited to diners seeking both classic and innovative dishes. Located in a bustling precinct, it promises a satisfying experience for locals and visitors eager for quality food framed by a relaxed yet polished environment.

Came here early on a Saturday night and managed to get on-street parking right outside. The service was fine - not like the previous reviews with poor service. We were a group of 6. Ordered the fish of the day, the beef ribs, the lamb cutlets (entree) and the wild mushroom risotto. The lamb cutlets and risotto were the stand outs. The beef ribs (pictured) were soft but lacked a bit of flavour. I didn't try the fish. In the lobby of the Olsen there is also a self serve candy bar which my kids loved. We had a great night out and this place definitely deserves more than the 3.7 is currently averages on google maps.

Can recommend. Decent food at fair prices, definitely worth a try. Calamari is good, braised beef rib has right flavour notes, could be more moist as ours is just slightly dry. Paella is tasty but would suggest the chef try making a crusty base, achieving that light crunch with caramelised rice at the base is what makes a paella great. Eye fillet was ordered as medium rare, when it’s that thick, the inside is more blue than we’d like. Pork belly, tip for chef - please Make the skin crunchy and less sweetness in the dressing please as it’s too dominant. We’d recommend the Creme Brûlée.

Had dinner here during our stay at the Como opposite. The interior was lovely and the food was good, but the service was incredibly slow. The waiters took forever to do anything, including forgetting our dessert menu, despite the restaurant being fairly empty on a Sunday evening. We had a big lunch, so we only ordered two mains and a side: braised beef rib and crispy pork belly. I thoroughly enjoyed the braised beef rib, but the sauce for the crispy pork belly was a bit too sweet for my liking. My daughter's kids' pasta was HUGE! They were very generous with their portions. It would be better if they provided kids' activity packs, though we might have needed to ask the reception as we did when dining inside the Peppers hotel. Overall, I don't understand why the Google rating is so low. Their dinner menu seems fine. It would be much better if the service improved.

Tried the express lunch today and found it just okay, nothing special. The steak sandwich was overcooked and dry, while the salad was better. The fries with sauce were quite tasty.
